Leon RANDELL 1884

New Zealand has well considered privacy laws and no published census which make following a family tree slightly more complex.
However, Leon Randell, in the family tradition, was a plumber. He was born 16 April 1884 in Onehunga, New Zealand. He was the third child in the marriage of Nathaniel Randell and Ellen Brennan. Aged 21 years he married Isabella May Young around 1905 in Auckland. Records show that they had two children, Leon Osmond Randell born 27 April 1907 and Noel Darrell Hayward Randell born 13 April 1913.
In a quirky eccentric flourish, Noel is Leon in reverse and for the superstitious amongst us, Noel’s birthday, is fascinating. I checked it was a Sunday.
Leon Randell appeared in at least two Trade Directories listed as a Plumber. In 1916 he was recorded in Wises Directory living at 39 Aitken Terrace, Grey Lynn, Auckland. It seems probable that this was the family home for their entire married life and that the children were born and grew up there.
Isabella May Young was born 28 August 1885, in Auckland, New Zealand. Continuing the intrigue of the children’s names, Haywood and Osmond, sound like grandparents maiden names and suggest that she would have a family tree which includes them. However a published family tree suggests Isabella was the youngest daughter of John Price Young and Lucy Lepper. John Price Young was born in Berwick On Tweed, Northumberland whilst his wife Lucy was born in New Zealand.
Isabella died relatively young aged 62 years, 16 November 1947. Leon Randell lived another eleven years and died aged 74, in April 1958. At the time he was living at 39 Aitken Terrace, which was the same address that appeared in the 1916 Directory.

Noel Darrell Hayward RANDELL 1913

It appears their youngest son Noel Darrell Hayward Randell married Audrey June Duncan, 4 March 1949 in Auckland. Noel died 24 July 1976 aged 63 whilst Audrey died later that same year, 2 November 1976. The couple were both cremated in the Purewa Cemetery, Auckland. I understand that the couple had two children who are alive today.

Leon Osmond RANDELL 1907

Records show that Leon Osmond Randell married Thelma Myrtle Dick in Herne Bay, Auckland and they had at least one child together. June Eileen Randell was born 20 June 1935 but unfortunately she died aged 47 years, June 1982.
Leon Osmond Randell out lived his wife but was also relatively young when he died, aged 6o years, 20 September 1967. Thelma Myrtle Randell (nee Dick), born within a month of her husband, 22 May 1907, died aged 57 years, 29 June 1964.

by Leon Osmond Randell & Reginald Haryey Rapley.

In an interesting postscript, Leon Osmond Randell together with associate Reginald Rapley invented a specialised claw hammer and on 28 April 1925 successfully applied for a US Patent. At the time of the application his address was stated as 37 Aitken Terrace, which I presume to be next door to his parents home.
