Ellen RANDELL 1850

Ellen Randell was born in the summer 1850 in North Walsham. She was the youngest child of James Randell and Mary Gambling. She was recorded in the 1851 census living with her parents, three brothers, Frederick, James and Horace and her older sister Mary Jane.
Sadly, by the following census, both her father James and sister Mary Jane were dead. When Ellen was eight her sister Mary Jane, died and the following year her father, James, passed away and by the time she was twenty two, her older brother James had joined them.
On a more mundane note, during this period she lived with her mother and brothers. Firstly, at the established address in Market Place, North Walsham and finally 'The Oaks'.
Age 25, Ellen Randell married Alfred Robert J Woolbright in Norwich, Norfolk. The wedding took place late in 1875 and the couple commenced their married life at 'The Woodlands', in the suburb of Heigham, Norwich.
Alfred, who was the same age as his wife, was connected to the brewing industry. Together the couple continued to live at 'The Woodlands' until in 1901 when they were found living in Yarmouth Road, Thorpe Next Norwich in a house called 'Avondale'. Her namesake and niece, Alice Ellen Wilkinson (Randell) lived exceptionally close by.
Ellen and Alfred had five children, all girls. By 1901 their eldest girl Mildred was married to Louis T Lindsey who was born 1872 in Great Yarmouth and their second child, Daisy Ellen Woolbright had married Sidney Dennis Hill of Norwich. Julia Woolbright was a typist in Norwich and lived with Daisy and Sydney and the two younger girls were still at home.

Alfred Robert James WOOLBRIGHT 1849

Alfred Robert James Woolbright was born 1849, in Norwich, Norfolk. He was he son of Solicitor and Alderman William Henry Woolbright who himself had been born in 1809. Alfred was the fourth child in a family of five the eldest two children being girls, Julia and Alice.
Sadly, not unlike Ellen, Alfred's father died in 1859 when Alfred was ten and he was left in the care his mother Blythe and sisters. Whilst, they appear to be far from destitute, in the following census they had been reduced to a single servant. By 1861 a gentleman lodger is sharing the house, he was employed as a travelling salesman which may be a pointer to the future employment of Alfred.
Ten years later, Alfred appears in the 1871 census as a 22 year old Draper, living with his mother at the home of his sister Julia and his brother in law, Charley Bullard. The house, 'Higham Grove' is brimming with people including the Woolbright's, assorted Bullard's including a second Arthur in the form of Charley's younger brother and three servants.
Charley Bullard, was an heir to Bullards Brewery but he unfortunately died in 1875, aged only 31. On the upside his widow and Alfred's sister, Julia, was left with four servants, including a sewing maid, and an opportunity to describe herself in the 1881 census as a 'Gentlewoman'.
Bullards Brewery which was run Sir Harry Bullard and by 1885 controlled almost 300 Public Houses. It was taken over by Watney Mann in the 1963.
Alfred appears similarly influenced by Charley Bullard and spends the remainder of his working life in the brewing industry. Firstly as a Commercial Traveller but by 1901 he is recorded as a Commission Agent (Brewing).

Mildred WOOLBRIGHT 1876 Norwich, Norfolk
Daisy Ellen WOOLBRIGHT 1879 Norwich, Norfolk
Julia WOOLBRIGHT 1880 Norwich, Norfolk
Hettie Mary WOOLBRIGHT 1883 Norwich, Norfolk
