Sarah RANDELL 1819

The 1841 census catalogues who was living in a property but not the relationship between the individuals. Sarah Randell in 1841 was age 20 and living in the Market Place home of, I presume, her parent's John & Sarah Randell.
The following year, July 1842, Sarah Randell age 23 married George Durrell in North Walsham. By 1851, Sarah and her own children, James 6, George 1 and Alice 4 months, together with a house maid and two apprentice grocers were still living in Market Place but in a different property. At this stage her husband George Durrelll was a Grocer.
By 1861 the family were living in Caster Yard, North Street, Romford and George age 45, was a Leather Currier. Sarah and four children lived with him but the oldest child was Alice, who was ten. Burton, Frederick and Randell were the other three children but James and George were absent.
Also with them was servant, Mary Farling who was unmarried with a baby of her own. I suspect that the little details hidden in the larger events give an insight into the people. Mary Farling and her illegitimate child probably say a lot about the Durrell household. My interpretation would be that the family were displaying a generosity which would not always be found in Victorian England.
Ten years further on the family has moved to Dockley Road, Bermondsey, Surrey. George was still a Leather Currier but the children living with them are now Samuel, Frederick, Randell and Charles who was born in 1864 when Sarah was age 44. Samuel was an apprentice to his father and Frederick was an office boy.
By 1881 the family have decamped again and were living at 5 Valentine Place, Brentwood, Essex. George age 66 remained a Leather Currier, whilst James, was a Ships Cook, Frederick, an Engineer in a boiler works, Randell, a Leather Splitter and Currier and Charles age 17 was a Railway Clerk.
I had some difficulty working out the actual names and final number of Sarah’s children but I realised Samuel and Burton were the same person.
Sarah Durrell born 28 March 1819 died in January 1882 in Bethnal Green, Greater London, Middlesex. George outlived her by fifteen years but several of her children died long before their time. Both Frederic and Randell died before their father.

ANCESTRY ~ James / John / Sarah

George DURRELL 1815

George Durrell married Sarah Randell at a ceremony in North Walsham July 1842. It appears he owned a Grocers shop in Market Place, North Walsham at the time. However, a year earlier in the 1841 Census the only George Durrell in North Walsham was a Farmer living with his mother Martha Durrell who was born in 1776. Later records show George was born in 1815 in East Ruston, Norfolk. Another Durrell family are long term residents of East Ruston. As they are also farmers the most obvious conclusion are that the two are related.
George changes occupation again in the subsequent census, this time to Leather Currier and this becomes his occupation for the remainder of his career.
Over the following years the family live in an extensive array of locations, whether this was because they are upwardly mobile or being chased by the bailiffs, I don’t know. The children are born in North Walsham and Norwich in Norfolk, plus London Essex, Romford, Middlesex and Lambeth, Surrey. Additional to this they are living in Bermondsey, Surrey which is where his final appearance in the census record occurs. In 1891 George is a patient in St Olaves Union Infirmary and Casual Wards. At this point he was aged 76 and a widower. He lived for a further six years and died age 82 in the final months of 1897 in St Olaves.
Sarah and George's children disappear, return, marry and have children of their own... They deserve a more considered study but at this stage I can confirm that James Joseph married Lizzie Botten from Sevenoaks, Kent in 1886. George John married Mary Wood from Hayes, Middlesex in 1876. Frederic William married Ellen Lumb of Andover, Hampshire in 1883. Randell married Alice Stoneham of Peckham, Surrey in 1889 and finally Charles married Ellen O'Connell of Westminster in 1889.

Sarah and George Durrell had the following children;

James Joseph DURRELL 1844 North Walsham, Norfolk
George John DURRELL 1849 North Walsham, Norfolk
Alice DURRELL 1850 North Walsham, Norfolk
Samuel Burton DURRELL 1853 Lambeth, Surrey
Frederic William DURRELL 1858 Norwich, Norfolk
Randell DURRELL 1860 Romford, Essex
Charles DURRELL 1864 Brentwood, Essex
