Alice Ellen RANDELL 1869

Alice Randell was the second of three children born to James Randell and Elizabeth Evans. She was born in Norwich in the April quarter of 1869.
In the 1871 census Alice was living with her parents but the untimely death of her father the following year profoundly changed her life. After her fathers death she moved to live with her grandmother and Uncle Horace in North Walsham.
Meanwhile, her sisters, May and Kate stayed with their mother Elizabeth and left Norfolk to experience a travel odyssey around England. Whilst Alice remained in North Walsham her immediate family appeared in the census records of Derbyshire, Lancashire, Middlesex, Surrey and Hampshire. It's easy to imagine that Alice and her sisters would have been quite different people, having experienced, I imagine, very diverse lives. I assume that financial circumstances dictated who stayed in Norfolk. Alice being age three, was possibly the right age to be less traumatised by the upheaval than her elder sister and of course Kate was a baby.
By the 1891 census Alice was age 22, and a women of her 'own means'. She was living with her uncle, the perennial bachelor Horace in Free School Road, North Walsham.
Six years later in January 1897 she married Alfred Wilkinson in Norwich.
Coincidence is everything, Alfred was a Vinegar Merchants clerk and in a strange twist her elder sister May married a Wine Merchant the following year.
By 1901 Alice and Alfred were living at 'Gablehurst' in Hillside Road in the descriptively named location of Thorpe Next Norwich. They had one domestic servant and two young girls, Violet age two and Kathleen, still an infant. It appears that Kathleen lived to the age of 103 and died in Sussex.

Alfred Edward Stephen WILKINSON 1871

Alfred Edward Stephen Wilkinson was born in the January quarter of 1871 in Norwich, Norfolk. He was the child of Stephen and Sarah Wilkinson. He was one of five children although his elder sister Rose seemed to have died in early childhood.
His father Stephen, was a railway Porter, a Ticket Collector and finally an Inspector. His upward trajectory was interrupted when he was paralysed, leading to his early retirement. No record of an industrial accident or degenerative disease is provided as the cause of his paralysis but it ended his career and led to his premature death.
The family lived together in central Norwich, in Bloomsbury Place until Alfred, who was effectively the eldest child left to marry Alice Randell in 1897. Alfred's frail father, Stephen Hubbard Wilkinson, died two years later.
Alfred was a Vinegar Merchants Clerk, this undoubtable is a title that gives no clear understanding of the occupation behind the name. A clerk was invariably educated, working in a clean environment and well paid. They were the accountants and business administrators of the day.
Alice and Alfred had two girls in the 1901 census but twin boys were born to the couple in 1907.

Alice and Alfred Wilkinson had the following children:

Violet WILKINSON 1899 Lacey, Norwich, Norfolk
Katheleen WILKINSON 1900 Norwich, Norfolk
Leslie Harry WILKINSON 1907 Norwich, Norfolk
Stanley Lawrence WILKINSON 1907 Norwich, Norfolk
