James RANDELL 1810

John Randell and his wife, Sarah, had two children who they named James. The first James, born around 1802, unfortunately died as a child. The second James, arrived 30 September 1810 but for some reason was christened almost a month later, 28 October 1810, in North Walsham.
The first appearance of James Randell in the Norfolk census record was 1841, when he was living in Market Place, North Walsham with his parents John and Sarah and his younger sister, also Sarah. The two males in the household were both recorded as Ironmongers.
His second and final appearance in the census record was registered in 1851 when he appeared as a married man, who fortunately from a research perspective, still lived at same address.
By 1851 he was married to Mary Gambling and the couple had five children. The eldest of which was identified as ‘son’ Frederick Randell age 13, born 1838 in North Walsham. However, this is some five years prior to the marriage of James Randell and Mary Gambling in April 1843. Frederick, who was absolutely central to the Randell family, was to marry Fanny Valentine Spence and is shown on the marriage certificate to have been christened Frederick Gambling. Frederick's younger brother, James was born after the couple married and was called Randell.
James Randell died, age 48, in January 1859 in North Walsham. He was outlived by his father and his wife and children. He enjoyed only 16 years of marriage and his youngest child Ellen was only eight at the time of his death.

ANCESTRY ~ James / John / James

Mary GAMBLING 1810

Mary Gambling’s first appearance in the census was in 1841 at the home of Robert Gambling in North Walsham. Robert Gambling, aged 61 was a chair maker. Also in the house with Mary is three year old Frederick Gambling, plus Emma Gambling age 17 and 'lodger', George Garnes who is age seven.
No relationships are recorded in the 1841 census, but it is assumed that Mary was the mother of Frederick and Robert was the father of Mary.
Mary, who was born in Smallburgh, 30 December 1808 was recorded in the parish register as the daughter of Robert Gambling and his wife Esther. Esther prior to her wedding had been Esther Dobbs. Around 1841 there were two Gambling households in North Walsham but in fact only one Gambling family, as by 1851 both groups were re-arranged to link the entire group.
Frederick and Mary are found with the Randells, as Mary Gambling married James Randell in the April quarter of 1843. Together Mary and James raised five children, with all evidence suggesting that Frederick born prior to their marriage was indeed their child.
Following the death of her husband James, Mary assumed the role of Ironmonger, listing herself as employing seven men and two boys in the 1861 Census. She appears as the owner of the business in several of the Trade Directories of the period.
Her 1861 domestic arrangements show her to be age 51, a widow and still living at the Market Place address with her son’s James and Horace and her youngest child Ellen. Frederick has married and set up a home of his own.
By 1871 she is living at ‘The Oaks’ in North Walsham, with Horace and Ellen. Ten years later she is still living with Horace, who never married. Following the death of her son James she acquired the female companionship of her granddaughter Alice.
She lived 23 years as a widow and died age 73 in July 1882 in Free School Road, North Walsham. At the time of her death she was recorded as an Annuitant.
