James RANDELL 1835

James Randell was the eldest son of William Hunter Randell and Elizabeth Moore. He was born 28 May 1835 and christened two days later at St Nicholas Church, North Walsham.
In the 1841 census he was living in Cock St, with his parents and elder sister Charlotte and younger brother Christmas. Ten years later, the 1851 census reveals the family had moved to Chapel Street, North Walsham. His father, William, was a carpenter journeyman and James, age sixteen, was his apprentice.
In the October quarter of 1859 James Randell married Emily Lane in Buxton, Norfolk. At the time of their marriage, James was 25 and Emily a year younger. It seems immediately following the marriage James Randell move into the Buxton farm of Emily's parents, Thomas and Mary Ann Lane. Whilst an exact location of the farm was not recorded, homes on either side of their census entry were in Lion St, Buxton. The adjoining property was the residence of carpenter James Lane. Emily's brother George, was also a carpenter, which may provide a clue to how James and Emily first met.
By the 1871 census James and his expanding family were in back in North Walsham living in Norwich Road. The birth places of their children, Herbert, age 9, born in Buxton and Blanche, age 7, born in North Walsham, provide a clear indication to when they moved.
James and Emily continued to live in Norwich Rd, for many years and were still resident in the 1901 census. James continued as a Carpenter and by 1891 was recorded as an employer.
In keeping with many of the Randell’s in Norfolk James lived an incredibly long time and died aged 90 in 1925. At the time of his death he was in the care of Alysham Workhouse, which by then was hospice caring for the old rather than a place for the destitute. He was buried in North Walsham Cemetery.

Emily LANE 1837

Unfortunately, it is difficult to be expansive about Emily Lane. Prior to her marriage she lived with her parents Thomas Lane and Mary Ann Bambridge. She shared her home with her four sisters and four brothers and for a time her Grandmother Mary Lane. Emily’s father, Thomas Lane was a Gentleman Farmer of forty acres. His property appears to be somewhere west of the centre of the village.
Fortunately, William White's Directory of 1845 refers directly to Thomas Lane's unique real estate. The following extract gives some insight into Buxton, a village which is both mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1068 and as the home of Ann Sewell, author of "Black Beauty":
"Buxton is a pleasant and well-built village, on the west bank of the River Bure.
Buxton Old Hall, with a small estate, is the property of Mr. Thomas Lane. This manor had anciently, the liberty of executing criminals on Gallows Hill. This has long been levelled, though it still retains the name."
Emily was born in 1837 and although this was the first year of formal birth certificates she is not included in the record.
Emily became Mrs James Randell in the final few months of 1859 and had the first of her four children with two years.
Emily Randell born in 1837, died in North Walsham in the April quarter of 1910. She was aged 73. James lived a further fifteen years.

James and Emily Randell had the following children;

Herbert RANDELL 1861 Buxton, Norfolk
Blanch RANDELL 1862 North Walsham, Norfolk
Albert RANDELL 1864 North Walsham, Norfolk
Matilda RANDELL 1872 North Walsham, Norfolk
